Travel tip #4 Take the bus or train
Just sit back and relax before starting work. On the bus or train, there’s no need to do anything and you can simply daydream, read a book or even do a bit of work. And all that whilst whizzing past traffic jams, traffic lights and maintenance works. Did you know that Groningen had the first hydrogen bus and that Arriva’s trains are powered by used frying oil? Public transport is always more sustainable than the car.
'But I don't live near a bus stop'
Have you looked up your public transport journey and found it to be too long? Drive or cycle to a public transport interchange near you, park free of charge or store your bicycle and grab a quick bus or train to your destination.
For example: You live in the beautiful village of Pieterburen, but work in Groningen. The bus from Pieterburen to Groningen takes 1.5 hours. Compared to a half-hour car journey, that’s a lot. But if you drive to the P+R at Baflo station, which takes 11 minutes, then take the train to Groningen, which takes another 22 minutes, the total journey time is approximately the same as driving. And there's no need to go hunting for parking spaces in Groningen.
Not too bad
"But public transport is very expensive?" It doesn’t have to be! With Arriva's and Qbuzz’s Dalvoordeelkaart ticket, you can travel outside peak morning hours with a 40% discount. And that applies to all bus and train journeys by these transport operators in Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland. By travelling once a month, you have already paid for this ticket in full! Need to go to Assen, Zwolle or beyond? NS's trains travel there too. NS has some attractive special offers too: check out their website for options.
