Travel tip #3 Get on your bike!

Groningen is a real cycling city. There are bicycles everywhere you turn. And cyclists are well taken care of. For example, attractive cycle paths can be found in and around the city. Do you live a bit further away? Then an e-bike or speed pedelec is a good alternative to the car. By getting on your bike, you are also being healthy and sustainable.

Doorfietsroutes

In Groningen and Drenthe, work is being carried out to increasingly improve cycle paths. A good example is the Doorfietsroutes. They connect surrounding areas (Zuidhorn, Bedum, Winsum, Leek, Ten Boer, Haren and Assen) with Groningen city centre. These cycle routes are well-lit, wide and safe, allowing them to cope with large flows of bicycle traffic and making them suitable for fast e-bikes.

Cycling from the P+R

Travel the first part of your journey by car, park your car free of charge at a P+R location on the edge of the city and then cycle the last part. Faster, healthier and cheaper. Increasing numbers of people are discovering this way of commuting, as it allows you to avoid traffic jams and provides a healthy dose of exercise. The P+R locations in and around the city of Groningen have increasing numbers of facilities.

Smart diversion

In Groningen, bikes come first. But with maintenance work, you can’t always prevent the disruption of cycle paths. That only happens if there really is no alternative, such as for the laying of cables and pipelines that lie underneath the cycle path. And from time to time, good cycle paths like these will need a new layer of tarmac, too. Once you are on your bicycle, we will notify you of the diversion route using signs along the route. Not just at the closure point itself, but even at important junctions. On the diversion routes, we adapt traffic lights as much as possible to ensure the shortest possible travel time.

Shared bikes

In the city of Groningen, you can make use of shared bikes or electric shared bikes! Electric shared bikes from GO Sharing and Bolt can be found at around 600 locations in and around the city of Groningen. These bicycles can also be found at the P+R locations Reitdiep, Kardinge, Meerstad, Haren and Hoogkerk. OV-fietsen (public transport bikes) can also be found at the NS stations. The shared bike is the ideal mode of transport for travelling in a sustainable, quick and healthy manner.
